The P-51D Mustang was our premier air superiority fighter in WWII. Developed in only 120 days by North American Aviation to fulfill a British Contract, the P-51, with the addition of the super charged Packard-built Rolls Royce V-1650 engine evolved into the finest piston engine wartime fighter. It had a top speed of over 500 mph and a ceiling over 40,000 feet. The Mustang's 8 hour range and 6 Browning 50 caliber machine guns made it a leathal long-range bomber escort.
